News & DevelopmentsHow to Make an eBook : XML and Other Mysteries Revealed10 Aug 2009The most popular request from our recent survey of Future of the Book conference delegates was, "Tell us how we can actually start making ebooks!" So, we took this as a marching order and here it is. It's a half day workshop in Auckland, 3 September 2009 from 9:00 to 12:30. How to Make an eBook: XML and Other Mysteries Revealed aims to lift the hood on ebooks, demystify a lot of the technical stuff like XML, and provide attendees with the background knowledge they need to get started making eBooks, either through a Do-It-Yourself route, or by showing you how to go about outsourcing your ebooks. Our intrepid workshop leader is Gerard Reid, head of Pindar New Zealand and probably the best-placed person in the country to cover this topic in simple language backed by years of practical experience. Please note that half a day won't turn you into an expert but it will give you some valuable knowledge and pointers and demystify this whole area. And if that's not enough, Gerard will devote part of his workshop to a Q&A so if he hasn't covered what's on your mind, you can make sure he's done it before you leave. Register here. AND THERE'S MORE! As well as the Workshop (for which a small fee is payable), there are two valuable events on the same day which we hope will make it worthwhile setting this day aside and making a trip to Auckland if you're out of town: 1. A Discussion and Open Forum on the 1000 Great NZ eBooks Project - this will take place in the afternoon at the same venue as the workshop and is FREE and open to anyone to attend. 1:30-3:00pm. Details here. 2. The PANZ Book Design Awards presentation ceremony will be held at the Auckland City Art Gallery from 6-8pm and will be a great chance to support this important award and network with others. There is a modest charge to attend this event. Details here. So, put a line through your diary now to spend Thursday, 3 September 2009 in Auckland. You'll find it a valuable and enjoyable day. We look forward to seeing you.
