Who we work with

Copyright Licensing New Zealand is the sole, recognised Reproduction Rights Organisation (RRO) in New Zealand for text-based copyright material and a member of the global body, the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO).

Working for Aotearoa

Copyright Licensing New Zealand provides copyright licences on behalf of authors, publishers and artists, and collect and distribute the revenues of these licences back to the copyright owners. Getting your head around the Copyright Act can be frustrating, as can hunting down the copyright owner every time you need to ask permission to copy a printed work.

Our tailored licensing solutions allow education facilities, businesses and government departments to copy, scan and share from copyright protected material including books, magazines, journals and periodicals; beyond what is permitted under the Copyright Act 1994. We are a not-for-profit business and all net proceeds from licensing fees are distributed to copyright owners.

We work with organisations both within New Zealand and globally to represent the interests of copyright owners and to enable users to copy extracts from 'published' work.

Internationally

We are the only Reproduction Rights Organisation (RRO) in New Zealand for text based copyright material and a member of the global body, the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO).

What is an RRO?
RROs began appearing around the world in the 1980s when the development of technology meant unauthorised and large-scale copying of copyright works was widely available. RROs derive their authority from national legislation and/or from contracts with publishers and authors. Although the structure and operation of RROs around the world can differ, each serves the same purpose – the collection and distribution of copyright licensing fees.

Today, RROs represent the interests of copyright owners by offering licensing schemes that enable users to copy extracts from published work for use within educational institutions, government offices and businesses.

Our agreements with overseas RROs
The licensing services provided by us are supported by agreements with the majority of New Zealand publishers (and through them, authors). We also have reciprocal agreements with overseas RROs so that when New Zealand titles are copied overseas, the local RRO can distribute the funds to us for distribution to the New Zealand copyright owner. Likewise, if an international title is copied under our licence, we will distribute the funds to the relevant overseas RRO for distribution to the copyright owner.
